After 50, a lot of people start noticing the same things: less stamina, more fatigue, skin that doesn't bounce back the way it used to, and muscle that seems to quietly disappear no matter how consistent you've been.
For a long time, we've measured ageing by how we look and how we feel. Now scientists are measuring it at the protein level — and the picture is more interesting than "you're just getting older."
The Study
In 2025, a study published in Cell analysed 516 human tissue samples across 13 organs, building what researchers are calling a "protein atlas" of human ageing. It's one of the most detailed pictures we've ever had of what actually changes inside the body as we age — and when.
Ding Y, et al. Comprehensive human proteome profiles across a 50-year lifespan reveal aging trajectories and signatures. Cell. 2025;188(20):5763–5784.e26.
Two findings stood out:
1. Organs don't age at the same rate — and age 50 looks like a real turning point. The data showed a noticeable shift in how proteins behave across tissues around this age, rather than a slow, even decline the whole way through.
2. Blood vessels age early — and a protein called GAS6 may be one of the reasons why.Vascular tissue showed some of the most pronounced early signs of ageing in the whole study. Researchers flagged GAS6 as a candidate protein worth watching in both vascular and whole-body ageing.
Why This Matters More Than Wrinkles
The takeaway isn't "panic at 50." It's the opposite: ageing is gradual and cumulative, which means it's also something you can influence early — before it shows up on the outside.
If your vessels, muscles and metabolism are already shifting years before you see it in the mirror, then the window to act isn't your 50s or 60s. It's now.
Where Boomers Fits In
We've spent almost 30 years helping Australians support their bodies through exactly this stage of life — originally for post-surgery recovery, and now for everyday healthy ageing. That's not a coincidence. It's the whole reason Boomers exists.
Two areas the research points to directly, that we've built our range around:
-
Muscle — Adequate, high-quality protein intake becomes more important, not less, as we age, particularly alongside resistance training. Our New Zealand Whey Protein Isolate and Concentrate are designed to be simple, clean, and easy on the gut — no fillers, no nasties.
-
Skin, joints and vascular support — Our Hydrolysed Collagen Peptides (bovine and marine) are formulated for the connective tissue and skin changes that show up as we age — the same systems this research is tracking at the protein level.
None of this replaces medical advice or a full checklist with your GP — but it's a reminder that the basics (protein, movement, sleep, and knowing your numbers) matter more with every year, not less.
The Habits Worth Starting at 45, Not 55
✓ Prioritise a balanced diet with adequate high-quality protein
✓ Only supplement with vitamins/nutrients you genuinely need
✓ Keep a consistent sleep schedule
✓ Combine regular aerobic exercise with strength training
✓ Track key numbers — weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose
✓ Minimise smoking, excess alcohol, and chronic sleep deprivation
